Can I shower straight after a bikini wax?

3 Min Read Tuesday 13th March 2018

The short answer is yes, you can shower after a bikini wax!

Bear in mind that most beauty therapists will apply a cooling, antibacterial lotion after having removed any hairs with waxing strips. This after-waxing lotion is applied directly to the treatment area post-wax. It instantly calms and protects the skin, while also removing any waxing residue, so it isn’t necessary to shower immediately afterwards anyway. So, if you can wait a day before bathing or showering then do so.

Showering, creams, and fragrances

Showering a few hours after your bikini wax is fine. However, when showering be sure to use cool, low temperature water. We also advice avoiding skincare products that could irritate sensitive areas of your skin and open pores, such as perfumed moisturisers and harsh shower gels.

Aside from cleansing your skin, using cool water also encourages redness and swelling to subside, much like a cold compress.

Why avoid using hot water?

We advise waiting 24-48 hour before using hot water, as the heat can aggravate your skin. The combination of open pores and excess heat can leave your skin vulnerable to infection. By using hot water, you are allowing your pores to open up and drying out your skin. This is a direct shortcut to ingrown hairs.

Therefore, to avoid a painful experience, we advise that you wait the recommended 24-48 hours before taking a hot shower or bath. Additionally, avoid swimming pools, jacuzzis, saunas and steam rooms. The heat could exacerbate any redness or inflammation.

General after care – type of clothing

As you can imagine, your skin is highly sensitive after having a wax. By wearing loose fitting clothing, you can reduce the friction against your skin as you move around. For your more delicate areas, we’d advice wearing cotton underwear as this will be in direct contact with your freshly waxed bikini line.

Keep your skin exfoliated

A couple of days after your bikini wax, start to regularly exfoliate your skin in the shower to prevent any ingrown hairs. This will leave your skin feeling beautifully smooth, removing impurities and providing a gentle yet effective exfoliation.

When to book your next appointment?

Having now had your bikini wax, we suggest that you wait up to 3 to 4 weeks before returning. The rate of your own hair growth should be considered when deciding on this. Waxing too often will not only be painful and cause skin irritation, but you also risk the chance of damaging your hair follicles. The follicles can become weak, risking the follicle eventually no longer producing healthy hair.
