Why does fake tan smell?

2 Min Read Thursday 17th August 2017

Sick of using a fake tan that smells like tangy biscuits? Ditch that old bottle of whiffy tanner for a sweet-scented alternative.

Sienna X tanners are formulated with a natural collection of fresh and fruity ingredients that lend the skin an uplifting fragrance. Our products neautralise the musty biscuity smell of traditional tanners so you can protect your delicate schnozzle from experiencing that characteristic odour while your skin tans to a gorgeously golden finish.

But why do other tanners smell? It’s got something to do with a clever substance called DHA that’s found in all tanning products. This ingredient is a form of carbohydrate that reacts with the proteins on the surface of the skin and causes it to gently darken, similar to the way a cut apple begins to brown when exposed to the air. This reaction creates a distinctive smell that is slowly emitted as the skin changes colour, which is why it can take a little while to notice it. The darker and richer the tanner (or the more DHA it contains), the stronger the smell.

To avoid smelling like a biscuit tin, choose a Sienna X tanner that will leave your skin feeling pampered, moisturised, golden and fragrant. Tanning just before bed can help reduce the smell too because you’ll sleep through the darkening process and can wash the product off first thing in the morning. Just make sure you’re skin has fully dried before getting under the covers to avoid staining your sheets.
