A second worry for those who haven’t used sunless tanning products before is that fake tan washes off in the shower. This is not strictly true – although tanning lotions wear off after time this is due to the skin’s natural regeneration process rather than the effect of water. The active ingredient in fake tan adheres to the top layer of skin cells and does not penetrate deeper into the skin, which means the colour gradually comes off as the cells are sloughed away. Gently patting the skin dry after a shower and moisturising well can lengthen the life cycle of your skin cells and in turn prolong your tan.
