So we’re going to share all our secrets with you!

We all know how amazing a professional spray tan can look. Combine a glowing and golden spray tan with a beautiful outfit and you’ll look and feel amazing. While spray tans have come a long way and now last longer than ever, they still of course naturally fade over time. The biggest question is, when will a spray tan start fading and how long does it last?

After your spray tanning treatment, you’ll want to know from your therapist how long you can expect your tan to last. Whether you’ve got a big event coming up, like a wedding, or you just want to stay tanned for as long as possible during the summer, you want to know how long your tan is going to last.

Not only that, you’ll want to know how to prolong your colour to stay a glowing god or goddess for longer! Be sure to check out our complete guide on the top five reasons why your tan is fading and how to avoid them!

It’s a question on the lips of everyone stepping into a spray tanning booth, but finding out how long a spray tan will last is dependent on a couple of different factors. Let’s take a look…

HOW LONG WILL MY SPRAY TAN LAST?

In general, your spray tan should last around a week, usually 5-7 days. This is pretty standard for professional spray tans, but still gives you plenty of time to get a tan booked in around other plans. While a spray tan lasts for around a week, you will start to see it fading before this time gradually. This is because the skin will naturally continue to regenerate itself, and your old skin cells will be sloughed away over the week to reveal your paler skin beneath. When these skin cells shed, they will begin to take the tan that is sitting on that layer with them, resulting in the tan gradually looking paler over time.

While a spray tan will fade over the course of a week, there are a few things to keep in mind when considering how quickly a tan will fade, as it varies from person to person. These include how well your skin holds onto a natural tan, how often you’re exfoliating your skin and how warm your showers and baths are, to name a few!

However, if you want your tan to look as good as possible for as long as possible, there are a few things you can avoid to help with this, which can help your tan to stay true for longer. Take a look:

MAKE YOUR SPRAY TAN LAST LONGER

  • Try to avoid going swimming for a few days after your spray tan if you want to prolong your glow. Chlorine that is found in swimming pool water can cause the rate at which your tan fades to increase, so avoid jumping into the pool after a tan.
  • On the day of your spray tanning treatment take along loose-fitting dark clothes, so you don’t lose colour through contact with tight fabrics. Not only will you avoid the risk of lighter-coloured clothing becoming stained, looser clothing will prevent your tan from rubbing off straight after your treatment.
  • Showering, particularly longer and hotter showers, can remove colour, so be aware that your washing routine will affect the longevity of your spray tan. When you shower, minimise the time you’re in there and be sure to turn the temperature down.
  • Soaking in the bath is particularly effective at fading the colour of your tan, so keep bubble baths to a minimum if you want your tan to stick around. If you must take a bath, take as little time as possible to avoid the risk of your tan fading away in front of your eyes!
  • Moisturising daily will make a huge difference when it comes to retaining your golden glow too, so don’t skimp on your applications. If moisturising is already part of your daily routine then great! If not, think about incorporating it into your existing skincare routine. This also has the bonus of keeping your skin silky smooth!
