Skincare changes to look out for among pregnant clients
Expectant women may find that their skin has suddenly switched personalities during their pregnancy. Hormone fluctuations, tiredness, vitamin deficiencies, a  changing diet and general malaise can all have an impact on the texture and appearance of their skin.
If a regular client has booked in for a facial as normal but is now expecting a baby, always reassess their skin before applying the same products you’ve used previously to create the most effective treatment.
For example, many pregnant women feel unable to eat and drink as normal in the first trimester as they battle with morning sickness. This can dehydrate their skin, causing it to look dull and pallid. You may need to use a richer moisturiser, a brightening serum or a nourishing face mask to soften and protect their parched skin.
New skin sensitivities and hormone fluctuations can also cause uneven pigmentation across the face. This condition, called chloasma, is better known as the ‘mask of pregnancy’. Look out for these changes and adapt your treatment accordingly using products formulated to combat an uneven skin tone, such as this purifying facial polish.
Avoid harsher treatments, such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels and deep extractions, instead selecting relaxing options that are gentler on the skin. And finally, tailor your treatments to make them as comfortable as possible for a pregnant client. Some women may need to move around a bit during their facial or lie on their side to relieve discomfort. Others might need a hand getting up on the treatment table or require extra pillows under their neck to reduce indigestion.
