Should I ask my client to remove their piercing before waxing their eyebrows?

A piercing is a contraindication that in some cases could restrict a waxing treatment, especially if it’s in an intimate area. Eyebrow piercings on the other-hand, are far easier to get around because they can be swiftly removed, much like earrings can be taken out. It’s completely safe to wax a client with a pierced brow as long as you follow these rules:

1. The skin around recent piercings needs to be fully healed before it is waxed over to avoid the risk of infection.
2. An eyebrow piercing can take at least 6 weeks to heal completely and a further 2-3 months before it can be safely removed.
3. Be aware that some piercings, even when healed, may get in the way of a treatment and you might need to wax around the area or ask your client to remove the piercing if it is safe for them to do so. Generally, clients with piercings can remove them for a short period of time if they wish to.
4. Wax the brows as normal if the stud or ring can be taken out but do take extra care around the pierced area, ensuring it remains clean.
5. If the piercing cannot be removed, dab some oil on it to prevent wax from sticking to it during the treatment. You don’t want to accidentally tug it out of place while it’s in situ so do the prep work first to prevent the risk of error.
6. Wax around the piercing, making sure to pull the skin taut to reduce discomfort for your client.
7. Use tweezers to remove those hairs that are close to the piercing to leave behind a neat, groomed finish.
