How to tan mature skin
Spray tans aren’t just for the young…
There are many advantages for the more mature lady (or gent) to having a spray tan. A spray tan is perfect for hiding bugbears such as broken capillaries, thread veins, varicose veins and stretch marks. It also evens out the complexion, helping to camouflage any age spots, liver spots and freckles.
And lets not forget, tanning is a fantastic boost to your self-esteem no matter what your age!
However, due to a reduction in sebum production, mature skin tends to be dryer than younger skin, so will require a slightly different approach.
Here’s how to spray tan mature skin:
-
Recommend regular exfoliation to your client. A gentle exfoliant used in the shower will remove dead skin cells and soften those dry, scaly patches that if left uncared for will ‘grab’ more tanner and create a patchy tan. Tanner will also glide on to softer, smoother skin, resulting in a flawless colour. However, because mature skin tends to feel thinner and delicate avoid recommending a rough exfoliant. Polishing Body Scrub is perfect because it’s effects are noticeable but mild on mature skin.
-
Hydrating and luxuriant on the skin, Sienna X tanners are formulated to nourish and soften. Recommend a light layer of tanner with a lower concentration of DHA, rather than a richer tanner, to uplift and enliven the sallowness of mature skin.
-
Before starting the application process check whether key areas of the body that tend to be drier, like the ankles, elbows and wrists, are well moisturised to encourage a seamless colour finish.
-
Go lightly with spray tanning the face — wrinkles, crow’s feet and lines will make it trickier to apply the colour evenly over the face. Employing a lighter touch will result in a natural look and enhance the natural features of the face.
-
Mature, dry skin flakes more quickly than younger skin leading to a faster fade off, therefore moisturising daily is essential to retain a golden glow. Advise your client to moisturise as often as possible to prolong the lifespan of their tan.
