Should I exfoliate before self tanning?

2 Min Read Thursday 21st April 2016

In a word…yes! Exfoliating before a self√Ǭ†tan will remove dead skin cells,√Ǭ†creating an even surface for your tanner to glide onto. Starting with a smooth base will also make it easier to apply an even layer of tanner (reducing√Ǭ†the risk of a patchy finish) and help to prolong√Ǭ†your tan!

Exfoliate your skin with Polishing Body Scrub 24 hours before tanning to slough away dead skin cells. A gorgeous blend of shea butter and sweet almond oil, this fragrant exfoliator is perfect for prepping the skin for a fake tan. Simply rub over the body, paying close attention to dry areas like the elbows, ankles and feet, and allow the fine pumice to work its magic before washing off in the shower.

Remember that the fresher your skin is before your tan, the longer your golden colour will last. This is because fake tan works by darkening the cells on the very top surface layer of the skin, which gradually flake away over time. If you apply tanner to skin that hasn’t been exfoliated this regeneration process will be much faster, reducing the life cycle of your tan.

Shaving or waxing a day before your treatment will also exfoliate the skin. However, after your tan has developed you should avoid waxing and keep shaving to a minimum to retain your golden colour for as long as possible.

Prolong your tan even further by switching to a mild shower gel, like Balance Body Wash, which gently cleanses the skin without stripping it of its caramel colour.
