What do YOU want to know about ?
Spray tanning has been around for a while. It's a very profitable industry and it's getting more and more popular all the time. Safer than exposing skin to UVA/B rays, spray tanning gives a gorgeous bronzed tan that lasts for days, and makes you look and feel great!

Why are there different types of spray tanning machines?
There are two types of machines. The compressors, where you have a gauge to set the pressure and the High Volume Low Pressure or HVLP. The HVLP is a turbine, preset at approximately 2psi.
At Sienna X we only sell HVLP's because they are safe and easy to use. As the psi (pressure) is so low the HVLP machines blow the spray tan solution onto the skin so gently that there is minimal 'bounce back'. This means less solution is used and less is wasted.
Within the HVLP's we stock, there is plenty of choice. Some have bigger motors than others, so will be more suitable for heavier use, tanning parties, busy salons etc and others are suitable for lower use, compact and great for mobile or salons with limited storage space. Speak with one of our consultants and we'll explain which machine is right for you and why.
Back to questions
Doesn't the spray go everywhere?
For your own professional care, and the customer's peace of mind, you'll need a cubicle.
Just like machines, there are a number of different cubicles. Some are very large, heavy and take a long time to set up. The leading cubicle is the pop-up cubicle, designed by the Spray Tan Cubicle Company.
The pop-up cubicle is light-weight, takes seconds to pop up and fold away, perfect for both mobiles and salons. Fortunately this is one of the lowest cost options as well as being the most convenient.
If you're buying a cubicle you need to consider:
- Weight
- Storage space
- Ease of use
- Extraction compatibility
- Ruggedness
- Looks
Many busy salons still use a pop-up cubicle because it's just so easy.
For the larger Salon you may want to use the space saving overspray booth, see shop.

How does the solution work?
The spray tanning reaction is similar to how an apple goes brown when you take a bite from it and leave it. The sugar and amino acids in the apple react with oxygen in the air and turn it brown. The solution you spray on to your customer contains an active sugar based ingredient, called DHA. Combined with this the amino acids on the skin and the oxygen in the air turns the skin a gorgeous golden brown, giving a lasting tan.
The solution also contains a bronze 'guide' colour to show the therapist where to spray. This guide colour washes away to leave a gorgeous tanned skin.
Spray tan affects the top layer of your skin, hence lasting upto 7 days, your lifestyle and lack of maintenance may reduce this.
Back to questions
Which solution should I choose?
We reckon that Sienna X Spray Tan solution is the best. (We would say that, wouldn't we? But just speak with our customers...).
Sienna X Spray Tan solutions are available in 8, 8.5, 10, 12 and 12.5% DHA so there will be one to suit your customers' skin types. The greater percentage of DHA the darker it will turn your customer's skin. As a rule use 12 and 12.5% for olive skins, 8 and 8.5% for pale skins and 10% for those who tan well in the sun. If you see an orange fake tan on someone, it is a result of too much DHA for their skin type, to avoid this, use a lower percentage on pale skins.
The best way to try out a solution is to test it. A number of our customers used other products until they tried ours. Now they are firm fans of Sienna X.
Back to questions
What training do I need?
Better training is better for your customers, better for your business and better for you.. Seize every chance to train, but make sure it's a good training course - you don't want to pick up bad habits!
Sienna X training is Accredited by the Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists. We cover all aspects of Spray Tanning such as
- Contraindications
- Health & Safety
- Machine Maintenance

Often therapists will come on a course to check this is what they really want to do. They get the chance to try out the machines, the products and the techniques, and to talk to other therapists.

Back to questions
How long will it take me to learn?
Training is vital, and after that it's a case of practicing until you are perfect. Some people need to do 10 bodies, others a few more.
Back to questions
How long will it take me to do a Spray Tan?
Well when you first start probably 15 minutes or so. Don't worry though you will soon speed up with practice, but it is worth taking your time so your customer is happy.
Back to questions
Do I have to come from a Beauty background?
No not at all. With our Accredited Training and support team this is a great business to be in and you can start from scratch.
Back to questions

Yes definitely it gives you credibility as a business, confidence to your customers and cover if in the rare event you need it.
Back to questions

Sienna X solutions are packaged in 1 litre bottles. When you first start you will probably spray 10 - 12 bodies from one litre, though with training and experience you can aim to get 15-18 depending on the size of the bodies you are spraying.
If you are getting less than double figures, you need to speak with one of our technical team who will discuss why and ways to improve.
