Caring for your mind during Isolation

4 Min Read Monday 23rd March 2020

If you’re feeling nervous about self-isolation and social distancing and the effects this may have on your mental health, we have some top tips to help keep you positive during this time.

Exercise

Regular exercise not only benefits the body but also benefits the mind.

Making sure you aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate to intensive exercise at home each day will help to boost blood circulation, which in turn helps you think more clearly.

As well as this, regular exercise is known to help the body release certain chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin which in turn, help to boost your mood at a time when you may feel most depressed, anxious or alone.

Exercise can also help to reduce sleepless night and improve overall sleep patterns, which in turn will have many benefits to your mental functionality and mood.

Try incorporating exercise into your daily home routine; whether this is vacuuming, running up and down the stairs or even mowing the lawn, there are lots of ways to keep active around the house!

Keeping in touch with others

Due to being unable to leave the house, it can be very easy to switch off from the outside world, particularly when it comes to keeping in touch with your loved ones.

Maintaining communication and friendships during isolation has several benefits to mental health, giving you an increased feeling of belonging and purpose. As well as this, general friendship and keeping up communication will increase your levels of happiness, reduce levels of stress and anxiety, and improve overall feelings of self-worth and confidence.

Ways to keep in contact with friends and family can include check-in phone calls or keeping in touch via social media. FaceTime, WhatsApp and Skype video calls are another great way to see your loved ones too, especially since we can’t physically be with them right now.

It’s important to make time to reach out to others, particularly as they may also feel alone at this time and appreciate the thought.

Making time to care for yourself

We often hear about how important it is to make time for yourself, so why not take some time to during isolation?

Mental Health charity Mind has found that taking time for dedicated self-care can help to manage your mental health and build your self-esteem.

One way we love to do this is to treat ourselves to a pamper night. Find your favourite face masks to give your skin a fresh glow, like The Clay Mask or The Miracle Mask from the Sienna X The Skincare Collection, your favourite book and a hot drink (or two), and treat yourself to some well-deserved downtime.

For a great added extra, why not indulge in a fabulous self-tan too? Discover your new favourite from our award-winning self-tan collection here.

Learn new skills

During this strange time of isolation, trying to keep the mind regularly stimulated will help you. Especially if you’re not in a position to be able to work from home or carry on with your usual favourite hobbies.

Taking the opportunity to learn a new skill from home could be a great way to help stimulate the mind and avoid boredom and give you some much-needed motivation.

Many people might take this opportunity of ‘free time’ to look into new career paths for when they return to normality, and with lots of online learning opportunities now there has never been a better time to take advantage of this.
