Why is my fake tan patchy?

3 reasons why your fake tan didn’t come out right.

Preparing the skin for a sunless tan is vital to achieving a flawless finish.

A blotchy fake tan is not a good look. But why does sunless tan appear patchy sometimes? Read on to find out:

Poor exfoliation Exfoliating poorly before a tanning treatment is one of the key reasons why a fake tan can look uneven or streaky. Getting rid of dead skin cells by exfoliating regularly will create a smooth base for the tanner to glide onto, resulting in a balanced tan.

Excessive dryness If your skin is particularly dry around your knees, ankles and elbows it will soak up more product. Avoid this by moisturising your skin with a rich lotion, like Radiance Body Balm, a day before your treatment. Dry spots will absorb the moisture so that when the times comes to apply your tanner it will glide over the skin evenly. Mix your tanner in with a touch of moisturiser before applying it to your face to create a lighter finish that looks as close to a natural suntan as possible.

Not enough self tanner Using the correct amount of tanner is important too. Don’t be stingy with the product and try to spread it too thinly over a large area as it won’t produce a rich colour result. Cover the skin with an even layer of tanner and use a tanning mitt to buff it in and create a seamless golden tan.

How to remove a patchy tan Remember that you can make a streaky tan fade faster by exfoliating daily with a scrub or a natural exfoliator made with brown sugar and lemon juice.
