A national drive to highlight the dangers of using sunbeds and the importance of regularly checking the body for signs of skin cancer starts today.

Sun Awareness Week is an annual campaign designed to educate people on the best ways to prevent cancer by protecting their skin from the harmful ultraviolet rays (UV rays) that can damage their skin cells. These rays are naturally produced by the sun but they are also emitted by sunbeds.

We’ve been championing the cause to raise sun awareness since we began but we’ve also been letting people know that they don’t need to sacrifice on their tan to stay safe. Over the years we have made it our mission to create a fantastic range of fake tan products that provide consumers with a safe alternative to tanning in the sun and using sunbeds.

Tanning industry expert James Harknett joined our ranks to become a Sienna X brand ambassador at the start of this month. James has always been a fan of the sienna X range and now he’s in the press again explaining how to achieve the perfect golden glow with our industry leading products.

James’ latest editorial was published in Men’s Health magazine where he provided plenty of sage advice on fake tanning and muscle definition for men. Here’s what we’ve managed to glean from his wise words:

1. Use a dark shade of fake tan to highlight muscle tone. A darker skin tone naturally helps the body to look more healthy and firm so the best way to define the abdominal area and pectorals is to rub a darker tanning lotion into the skin using a tanning mitt.

2. Flex your muscles. It’s only through flexing the muscles that you’ll be able to see the outline of your triceps and biceps so bend your arms and get the muscles to contract and relax so you can get a better view of where the fake tan should be applied. Highlight your best bits by applying sunless tan to the outline.

3. Give your tan time to develop. It’s important to tan at least a day before an important event and to leave the lotion on overnight if possible to allow the formulation to work its magic. If you are off on holiday and need to catch an early morning flight it’s better to tan a couple of days in advance so that you don’t have to wash the tan off before it’s had time to fully develop.

4. Get moisturising. Keep your tan looking spectacular by moisturising regularly with an oil free moisturiser. We also recommend using a gentle shower gel like balance body wash to avoid stripping the colour from the skin.

How to fake tan.

Tanning at home is simple – just apply the colour, wait for it to develop and wash it off in the shower to enjoy a gorgeous glow that lasts for the whole week!

If you’ve never self tanned before check out our top tips for achieving a superb result that looks natural, radiant and bronzed:

1. Exfoliate your whole body a day before your home tanning session to remove dead skin cells. The active ingredients in fake tan latch on to the uppermost layer of skin on your body so it’s vital that the surface is clean, fresh and even. If the lotion attaches to dry skin cells the colour will fade away faster when the cells naturally flake away with the passage of time. If old skin cells have already been sloughed off with your exfoliator your tan will last much longer.

2. Remove any unwanted body hair 24 hours before you apply the fake tan. Waxing tends to open up the pores so it’s best to wait for them to close up before a treatment to avoid a dotty finish.

3. Cover any areas that you don’t want to darken too much with a moisturiser. This might include the elbows, knees, tops of feet and hands.

4. Apply the fake tan starting at your feet and move upwards. Rub the lotion into the skin in gentle, circular movements to allow for maximum take up and to avoid streaks. Once you reach your face take a small amount of fake tan and gradually rub it into the skin in the same way as you would apply a moisturiser. Don’t overdo it though! You can always add more with another treatment if you want a darker result.

5. Wear loose clothing that doesn’t stick to your body for the next four to six hours so that the colour can fully develop. Wash the guide colour off in the shower, pat dry and follow up with a rich moisturiser to lock in the burnished colour.
